PAIN MEDS

"You're going to have to shoot the lock," Wes tells Harry as we stand in a semi-circle around the door leading behind the pharmacy counter. Hopefully, the room beyond contains the steroids we need to treat Aiden's failing lungs, but we won't know for sure until we break in.

"It's going to attract attention as soon as I pull the trigger," Harry says.

Both men are splattered with Z blood and are a total mess. Harry tore a hole in the knee of his black jeans, and Wes has a dark purple bruise forming under his eye. I am not any better off. My head aches from being slammed against the wall by the Z and then the floor when we dived through the stairwell door. It's surprising any of us are alert after the battle we fought.

I look between the two. "At least it's locked, so that has to be a good sign, right? I mean, if we can't just walk in then neither can anyone else."

"I'm not assuming anything," Harry flatly states.

Finding the pharmacy was simple, and we lucked out by not running into a group of Zs only singles roaming mindlessly around the hallways. The last five minutes have been the easiest of the day so far. Which is good since we are in desperate need of a lull in the action and need a moment to figure out what to do about the door.

I take a deep breath and scan the pharmacy waiting room. It's in shambles with chairs overthrown, magazines littering the floor, and blood smeared on everything. My mind races with images of all types of people sitting in here waiting for their medication when they are brutally attacked. A single Z can overpower a handful of unarmed people, let alone those who are sick. I picture them raiding the room and sinking their teeth into the delicate skin of their prey. Ciaos would have erupted as others hurried to get away, but those who were caught were doomed. The initial introduction of the virus is said to be so painful it is debilitating. It makes the newly afflicted an easy meal depending on their drive to live. For those who were not devoured, their minds lost all rational thought, and they became flesh-eaters.

"Just fucking shoot it, Harry. I'll stay here and keep watch while you and Quinn grab what we need," Wes urges his friend.

"I don't like that option either. We stick together, remember?"

Wes runs his hand over his face. "Well, something is going to have to give if we want to get this done and make it back to Aiden."

"He's got a point, Romeo," I chime in.

The idea of leaving someone behind is unsettling for Harry, and he is trying to figure out a workaround. In the short time that we have been around each other, one thing has become very evident to me; he is the ultimate soldier who is not only fighting to win but fighting for the well-being of those most important to him.
